Castles of the Samurai

Jennifer Mitchelhill, with photographs by David Green

Kodansha International 2003.

Japanese castles possess a unique beauty.
Their size and strength, the combination of
building materials and the precision
in which they were used, along with
the intricate designs and decorations
inspire awe in all who see them.

Australian husband and wife team Jennifer Mitchelhill and David Green were teaching in Kanazawa when they became involved in the reconstruction of Kanazawa Castle between 1998 and 2001. This interest led them to visiting and photographing over 45 castles around Japan.

Subtitled Power and Beauty, this magnificent book is broken down into four main parts; Who built the castles and why The castle as a fortress, the beauty of the castle, and finally, the fate of the Japanese castle. It provides the reader with a background to the castle building era, as well as detailing the essential elements of Japanese castle construction, including location, layout, moats, stone walls, gates, watchtowers and the magnificent main keeps.

The well researched explanations are the result of a labor of love, while the excellent photographs, mostly color, serve to enhance this fascinating book. Detailed illustrations round out the explanations, and make this a truly valuable insight into the castles of Japan.
