Japan, Country Living
In this book, Japan, Country Living, author and long time Japan resident Amy Sylvester Katoh
has presented a series of images, traditions and aesthetics that is fast disappearing from this
ancient nation, and since it’s first release in 1993, fast becoming scarce in the rural settings
in which she and photographer Shin Kimura sought them out.
A follow up to the very popular photo book, JAPAN, The Art Of Living, Japan Country Living provides
the reader with information on Japanese country living, as well as an invaluable source of ideas for
those wanting a taste of old Japan and of nature in their homes. The various chapters are broken
down into sub chapters and cover heritage, country ways, the art of everyday and Ms. Sylvester Katoh’s
specialty, the Indigo Tradition, being Japanese dyed textiles.
Once again photographer Shin Kimura has supplied the book with it’s heart, over 450 superbly balanced
full colour photographs.
Japan Country living was first published by Tuttle in 1993, and remains a beautiful and most valid book
for anyone with an interest in Japan.
