Muromachi Period(1337 – 1573)

Also known as the Ashikaga Period after the ruling Ashikaga Shogunate, the Muromachi Period took its
name from the Kyoto district where the first Ashikaga Shogun, Ashikaga Takauji, had established his office.
The Ashikaga Shogunate, particularly under the Third Shogun, Yoshimitsu had quelled the disputes within the Imperial lineage, eliminated his enemies and brought stability and peace that lasted for many decades.
During this peace, cultural arts including the performing arts of Noh, the tea ceremony, flower arranging
and sumie ink painting and the influence of Zen Buddhism were greatly developed.

Corruption and a weakening within the later years of the shogunate led to the Onin War (1467-1477)
and the subsequent period of civil war known as the Sengoku, or Warring States period.
