A Temple on Holy Mt. Koya

2013.06.24 | カテゴリー : 新着情報 | 投稿者名 :

If your out to see a temple or two and want to avoid some of the crowds, bus tours and stalls selling
souvenirs, then Koya-San is for you. What well may be the Nara of 40 years ago, the Buddhist area on
top of Mt. Koya has just as many temples, mossy paths, spiritual and cultural draw cards as Nara or Kyoto, however it benefits from its relative isolation in Wakayama prefecture, 3 hours from Osaka or 4 hours from
Nagoya.

A one or two night stay is best as among the buildings and other UNESCO listed sites there is plenty
to see, with the accommodation itself being one of the attractions. To stay at Koya-San you will have
to stay in one of the many temple lodgings available, enjoy food made by the monks and you will have
the option of attending morning prayers. Certainly a more personal experience than standing in line at
Kyomizu-dera.The image here was taken at one of the temple lodgings, and although at the time was
undergoing renovations, it offered the perfect opportunity to gain access to all areas of the property and
the staffs time as we were the only guest for the two days. This was the second time and temple for me
to stay in at Mt. Koya and the beautiful lacquered red floors  of this temple helped to add atmosphere to
an already great experience.

At different times of the day, I spent a few hours, camera and tripod in hand, wandering around the temple
grounds capturing the light at different times of the day. I think it would be hard to not come away with a satisfactory set of images from such a photogenic location, and this particular one is one of my favorites.

Taken at about four in the afternoon, I was able to capture some of the silhouettes of the trees in the garden
and life outside that contrasted with the solitary atmosphere in the hallway that some of the monks in these temples inhabit.
