Shibata Katsuie (1522~June 14, 1583)

A samurai military commander under Oda Nobunaga,
Shibata Katuie was born in the village of Kamiyashiro,
modern day Meito-Ku of Nagoya City.

Katsuie was originally a samurai of Nobunaga’s younger
brother Nobuyuki, and was involved in the conspiracy
to overthrow Nobunaga. Nobuyuki had the support of
Shibata Katsuie and Hayashi Hidesada, however they
were defeated in the Battle of Ino. On the intervention
of the Oda brother’s mother, Tsuchida Gozen, Kaysuie
and Hayashi were spared, however, Nobunaga had his
younger brother executed. From that time on, Katsuie
dedicated himself to loyally serving Nobunaga.

During the battle of Anegawa (1570) Katsuie was under siege by 4,000 samurai under the Rokkaku Clan
in Chokoji Castle. Katsuie led an all out attack, causing the Rokkaku to retreat. His fierce actions in this
fight earned him the nickname of Oni Shibata (Devil Shibata).

Completing orders to take the Hokuriku region, Kaga and Noto, he was fighting to gain Etchu Province
when Nobunaga was assassinated by another general, Akechi Mitsuhide in Kyoto’s Honno-Ji.

Following the death of Nobunaga, Katsuie championed Oda Nobutaka, Nobunaga’s third son as heir,
but was to face Toyotomi Hideyoshi who was supporting the infant, Hidenobu. Tensions between
the two former vassals escalated, leading to the Battle of Shizugatake, in which the Toyotomi destroyed
his army and Katsuie was forced to surrender. Setting fire to Kitanosho Castle, he committed seppuku
as it burned.
