Hibachi Japanese Braziers /
Hibachi, or charcoal braziers were Japan’s traditional heating appliances. Hibachi were typically made from ceramics, wood, metal or even stone with not fire, but hot coals to warm a room.
In these modern times, turning the hot coals with metal chopsticks and tending the hibachi evokes times of
a somewhat elegant and unhurried lifestyle.

Hibachi came in all sizes and shapes too, round, squared or rectangular even hexagonal.
During the Edo Period, some even contained small drawers to keep such things as snacks of nori,
dried seaweed or senbei rice crackers and tea in.

There were always small tools, such as the junou, a trowel for clearing the ashes and steel tong-like hibashi for moving the coals too, and a small round tripod or goutoku on which the kettle would be placed.

Hibachi are still popular today, however instead of warming rooms, the elegant braziers are used as interior decorations such as flower pots and even topped with glass becoming side tables.
