Birthplace of Samurai Heroes, Nakamura Koen (Nakamura Park) /
The first thing that grabs your attention as you exit the Nagoya City Higashiyama Line
Subway’s Nakamura Koen Station, is the huge, 24 meter high, bright red Shinto Torii gate.
Passing through the gate and walking about 300 meters is Nakamura Koen, a large public park,
and in the very middle, the Toyokuni Jinja, a shrine dedicated to the second of the three unifiers of Japan,
Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
To the right of the shrine is a memorial stone, placing this site as the birthplace of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Less than 100 meters away, on the edge of the large park is the Myokoji Temple. The temple was built
by the warlord Kato Kiyomasa using excess materials from the construction of Nagoya Castle on the site
of his own birth. Behind that stands the Jyousenji, also constructed by Kiyomasa in memory of his cousin,
Hideyoshi. On the opposite side of the park is a memorial museum dedicated to the two local heroes,
Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Kato Kiyomasa, and featuring a number of items belonging to the two samurai.
The gardens surrounding the shrine, temple and museum are peaceful and beautiful, and is a popular area
for relaxing and feeling history.
