A popular treat served at the Boys Day Festival(May5) is the Kashiwamochi, a Japanese sweet
where red bean paste is inserted into a rice cake made from rice flour. The sweet is served wrapped
in the broad leaves of a Kashiwa or Emperor Oak tree. It was believed that as the leaves from the
Kashiwa remain strong until the end, it would bring prosperity and posterity and ensure the child’s
healthy growth and future.
