Kenchuji Temple / 尾張徳川家ゆかりの寺・建中寺(名古屋市)
Nagoya Castle is the symbol of Nagoya. This was where Tokugawa Ieyasu’s 9th son,
the first of the Owari branch of the mighty Tokugawa clan, Tokugawa Yoshinao held court.
When Yoshinao died in 1650, his son and successor, Tokugawa Mitsutomo had the Kenchuji
built. It later became the Owari Tokugawa family temple, and the following generations
are enshrined here.

In 1785, a great fire occurred in nearby Ozone. A burning futon was blown onto the main roof of
the Kenchuji, destroying all but the main and third gates, which still stand to this day. Through
the efforts of the chief priest and the Owari Tokugawa clan, the temple was rebuilt in 1787.

Thankfully, the temple’s principal image of the Amida Buddha, interred in the main prayer hall
was saved from the devastating fire, and restored to its position when the main prayer hall was
rebuilt in 1787. Being 27m wide, 25.2m deep and boasting a 700 square meter traditional tiled
roof surface, the Kenchuji remains as the biggest wooden building in Nagoya City. Kenchuji’s
main prayer hall, various gates, halls, and the mausoleum of the Tokugawa clan have been
designated as Aichi Prefectural Tanjible Cultural Properties.

The temple escaped the destruction of the World War Two air raids that wiped out much of Nagoya’s
long and proud history. It remains one of the few places in Nagoya retaining a connection to, and an
atmosphere of Edo period charm.
