Traditional Sunken Hearth, Irori

Traditional Sunken Hearth, Irori

Irori were a major part of a traditional Japanese home and in Tea Ceremony rooms.

Irori were square shaped pits in the floor of a dwelling, surrounded by wooden or clay edging and filled
with fine ash. Coals were placed on this ash for heating the home, cooking food and boiling water.

Above the irori hung a jizaikagi, a pot-hook consisting of a bamboo tube containing a steel rod.
A fish shaped wooden lever would allow the pot to be raised or lowered over the irori.

In the olden days, family life centered around the irori, and some larger homes would have more than
one of the traditional hearths. Modern day homes rarely have irori, unless one of the rooms is designed
to host Tea Ceremony parties.
