Nara Period(AD 710 to 794)

In 710, the Imperial Government moved the nation’s capital to Nara, and the city of Heijo-Kyo was established, it’s design based on an early Chinese capital.  Buddhist culture flourished during this time as a result of Imperial support, and artisans produced sophisticated artworks and sculpture, and erected impressive Buddhist temples and works, such as the cast bronze Great Buddha. Chinese literature was studied, and the characters adopted into the Japanese language.

The Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki, two official histories of the nation were published during this period.
Government and law reform took place and incorporated Chinese concepts.

Through a series of military campaigns, the Imperial Government extended its territories to southern
